Teaching Philosophy

Design process is the most highly valued aspect of interior design. Regardless of the situation, or the complexity of the problem, design process is the tool to create an innovative solution adaptable to a constantly changing and global world. Teaching students the process to conceptualize space, articulate their design, communicate the rationale for decisions and critically evaluate the design solution is an extremely rewarding experience. Team work, communication, and exploration are utilized to create an active learning environment which promotes creativity, individuality and discovery.

Teaching & Research Emphasis

Primary teaching interests include design programming, commercial interior design, concept development, and the history of interiors and architecture. Emphasis is upon critical thinking, design process, and the importance of research in interior design. International education is emphasized through integrating global perspectives into course lectures and projects, participation in the TCU at Scotland Program and supporting international education through serving as TCU’s Director of International Studies:  TCU Abroad.  Research emphasis includes creating an interactive learning environment, the work of E. Fay Jones and the quiltmaking including oral interviews with North Texas quilt makers.
